One of the best ways to achieve a stunning, picture-perfect smile is with veneers. If you’re considering getting these custom-made shells to address various tooth imperfections, you may be curious about what your teeth look like under these coverings.
Understanding the Two Types of Veneers
Dr Anish, a dentist in Newcastle, explains the key differences between porcelain and composite veneers. “With composite veneers, the teeth remain unchanged when removed by the dentist. However, this isn’t the case with porcelain coverings,” he notes.
Porcelain veneers require the removal of a thin layer of tooth enamel to ensure a perfect fit within the smile. This process can lead to tooth sensitivity due to the alteration of the protective enamel layer.
In contrast, composite veneers involve minimal enamel removal.
“Only a small amount of enamel is removed, and the nerves and roots are never touched,” Dr Anish explains.
He emphasises that any adjustments to the teeth are permanent.
Generally, composite veneers require more preparation than porcelain, though sometimes, no preparation is needed for veneers at all. Dr Anish adds, “We often only need to remove anywhere from 0.0mm-1.5mm of the tooth to create adequate space for the veneers.”
